Land Holdings - Treaty Rock Farm
In November of 2007, the Ag Trust and its partners protected 115 acres of historic Treaty Rock Farm, long identified as a conservation priority by the state of Rhode Island.
In constant agricultural use by the Richmond family for over 350 years, the 120‐acre farm was also the site of an alliance made between Colonel Benjamin Church and Queen Awashonks of the Sakonnet Indian tribe during the late stages of King Philip’s War. The farm’s stonewalls, open fields, and barns, visible from West Main Road, provide pastureland for beef cattle, sheep, hay and silage corn.
Together with the Natural Resource Conservation Service and the Rhode Island Lands Preservation Commission, the Ag Trust holds the deed restrictions for 95 acres of the farm, ensuring they will always be in agricultural use. The restrictions for an additional 20 acres along the Sakonnet River, held by The Nature Conservancy, are the site for a maritime shrubland habitat restoration project.
