Land Holdings - The Sakonnet Vineyards
In January of 2008, the Ag Trust purchased 94 acres of the Sakonnet Vineyards from owners Earl and Susan Samson with financial support from the United States Department of Agriculture and the Rhode Island Agricultural Lands Preservation Commission. This fertile farmland that abuts the Watson Reservoir is essential watershed for the reservoir, which supplies drinking water to the Town of Newport, and for Dundery Brook and Briggs Marsh, which replenish the groundwater on which Little Compton wells depend.
The conservation easements protecting these acres ensure that its agricultural use will continue forever. They also provide limited access to the public for prearranged public gatherings at least four times a year.
